Everyone wants clear skin that is free from broken veins which are distressing and can undermine confidence and even impact the way people lead their lives in terms of what they wear.

Thread veins/spider veins are tiny blood vessels that run very close to the surface of the skin and are usually red or purple in colour.

The condition is associated with increased pressure to the veins, caused by abnormal blood flow and weakening of the blood vessel wall.

Hormonal changes, pregnancy, alcohol consumption and excessive sun exposure are all contributing factors.

These veins are harmless and the disfigurement is only of a cosmetic concern, but often a major source of embarrassment for men and women.

How does the laser work?

The laser emits a specific wavelength of light which targets the red pigment/blood vessels.

The laser heats up the small veins causing the blood to coagulate inside the vessel which in turn collapses and seals.

Over the next four to six weeks all traces of the blood are reabsorbed by the body during the healing process.

How does it feel?

During your treatment you may feel a slight heat stinging sensation as the laser light is pulsed along the small vein, but most people find it relatively comfortable.

Immediately following treatment the area may show evidence of slight swelling, with a temporary superficial deeper reddening of the blood vessel, which may also appear slightly raised.

A mild sunburn type sensation may be experienced for a few hours following treatment, but can be soothed and cooled with the application of witch hazel or aloe vera gel.

How many treatments are needed?

The number of treatments needed will be ascertained at your consultation, as it depends on the size and number of veins.

In most cases facial vessels normally require 2-3 treatments, whereas vessels in the legs may benefit from 3-4 treatments.

The recommended treatment interval is 4-6 weeks apart.
